Zheba was born from a simple need: a place where the languages woven through Afghan life, English, Pashto, Dari, and Arabic, can meet, connect, and reflect one another.
For children learning the words of their grandparents. For students exploring language across cultures. For those seeking a deeper understanding of the Holy Qur'an. For travelers finding their way through Kabul, Wardak, Jalalabad, Mazar-e-Sharif, or Peshawar.
Zheba is a small lantern in a vast landscape, helping people carry language, culture, and connection across generations and borders.

How to Use Zheba
1. Getting Started
You can use the Dictionary, Flashcards, Proverbs, and Islamic sections without an account. To save words, track your learning progress, or contribute to the dictionary, you'll need a free account.
To create an account: click Register in the top right, enter your details, and submit.
To sign in: click Sign In, enter your email and password.
To change your password: click your name (or open the menu on mobile) → Account Settings.
2. Translating Words (Dictionary)
The main page — a word or sentence translator between English, Dari, Pashto, and Arabic. Choose your From and To languages, type a word or sentence, and click Translate.
- 🔊 Tap the listen button to hear the word spoken aloud.
- A romanized spelling (e.g. "Salaam") appears under Dari and Arabic words to help you sound them out.
- An "Azure" badge means the word wasn't in our dictionary and was translated automatically.
- Click Save to bookmark a word (you'll need to be signed in).
3. Saved Words
Your personal list of bookmarked words. Filter by language with the dropdown, edit a word with the pencil icon, remove it with the trash icon, or tap the 🔊 icon to hear it.
4. Flashcards
A study tool built from your saved words, in two modes:
Flip Cards — pick your From/To languages, tap the card to reveal the translation, then mark I knew it or Don't know.
Multiple Choice — pick the correct translation from four options. Your score updates live as a percentage.
5. Afghan Proverbs
Choose Dari or Pashto, then step through traditional sayings one at a time with Prev/Next — each card shows the proverb, pronunciation, translation, and what it teaches.
6. Islamic Section
Surahs — select one from the dropdown to see each verse in Arabic, romanized, and translated, with an audio recitation for every ayah.
Duas — select a dua to see it in Arabic, romanized, and in English, Dari, and Pashto.
Quranic Vocabulary Flashcards — study 10 words at a time; score 80% or higher on Multiple Choice to unlock the next 10.
7. Contributing Words
Signed-in users can add words to the shared dictionary from My Words (or Admin Panel for the site administrator). The same panel lets contributors add Proverbs, Quran Vocabulary, and Duas.
Tips
- Almost every word or phrase has a 🔊 listen button — use it often to practice pronunciation.
- The small italic text under Dari/Arabic words is the romanized spelling, to help English speakers sound words out.
- You don't need an account to browse, translate, or study — only to save words or track progress.
- If a translation looks wrong, sign in and add the corrected version yourself, or let the site admin know.
